Hey thanks for visiting my blog. Often times when I am preparing a sermon an idea comes to me that I want to unpack a little more. Hopefully, this blog will allow me the place to do that. Then again, maybe I’ll just talk about my kids. I’ll try to update it once a month..
The text we are in this week is Matthew 9:1-8. It’s the story of the paralytic who gets lowered down through the roof. Great story. There are so many cool things about it: 4 buddies go the extra mile for a friend, Jesus tells the guy that “his sins are forgiven” and then is like, “Oh, and I’ll heal you too.” Great stuff. As I was going through the text this week I was struck by something different. In all three accounts (Matthew, Mark and Luke) it says that Jesus read their minds. Is that freaky or what!? He read their minds! Here’s the thing. If somebody read your mind wouldn’t you be creeped out? I would. Not these Pharisees. It goes right by them and in a few verses they are bugging Jesus about something else. I wouldn’t go anywhere near Him after that. But the weird thing is they did. They thought that they were right. So much so that they didn’t care if he read their minds. They were right.I started thinking about Jesus reading my mind and I got all self-conscious because He can still do it. At the end of verse 8 it says that the people were filled with “awe.” Heck yeah. I’d be filled with awe too if someone went all X-Files on me.What is amazing is that even after reading their minds, He still loved them. How is that possible? How do you still love anyone after you can read their minds. How do you die for some jerk who is thinking all sorts of stuff about you? Jesus did it. It’s not just that He did it for us but that He did it knowing our thoughts. It’s creepy and wonderful all at the same time.
